Values & Interactions

After reading the introduction and chapter 2 parts on DIY citizenship, I began to make some connections to the Filter Bubble. Prior to those articles, I felt that the Filter Bubble discussed how overtime people will be redirected to different points in the internet, while looking at screen formats that differ from what other people see. I also wondered if it would be possible for people of different lenses to interact with one another if they are being projected to those different endpoints.

However, after I read those DIY citizenship articles, I began to realize that no matter where a filter bubble takes a person, there are ways the internet can take them to different websites where they can interact with one another. For example, sometimes I’ll read the comment sections of various yahoo news articles and I’ll see people interacting with one another (e.g liking comments and directing responding to comments). I feel like people who have different values & lenses can go to the same article, but it’s just their path to getting to that article can be quite different from one another.

And even if the filter bubble shapes how people see the world and probably reinforces their values, there will always be outside experiences that can also influence how they see the world around them and what they choose to click while on the internet.

It made me realize that when people do any sort of action online (e.g clicking and/or interacting with others) or in real life, they are acting out their belief in their value. In other words, when people come together to do something, they’re acting out a value that they have deep within themselves. For example, when people decide to make a political move like hack an internet website to make it crash/not viewable to the general public in order to make a point, they’re acting out their belief in their point. And when they interact to crash that website, other people participating in that action also value the point/purpose they were trying to make.

Also, I feel like when people shape their filter bubbles online, they are doing so based on their values and when they reach a website and interact with other people, they are performing an action based on the values that similar to the ones that led them to that website.

And even if the people who come together don’t have different ideas about a topic, they all probably have different skill levels and knowledge that can help each other accomplish an action that one person could do, but wouldn’t have the ability to do on their own. I also feel like the internet can be a good place for bringing people physically together who may or may not have had been able to do so prior to the internet.

Lastly, I think it’s possible for people to have different values and reasons from one another for clicking on an article, and I think it’s possible for each person to have different values when they comment on an article from the value that led them to click on the article to begin with. For example, perhaps they clicked on the article because they seriously wanted to watch a 5 hour video that showed paint drying on a wall because they were truly curious/interested, but then chose to comment on it afterwards because in that particular moment they wanted to troll the other viewers. In essence, I feel like values & beliefs are what leads us to act and are what leads us to make the interactions we do with one another.
